Is Insurance for Motorcycles Required?

Many people are under the impression that motorcycle insurance is not necessary or required in the State of Florida. That is not really the case, Florida law does say that $10,000/$20,000/$10,000 is required per Florida Statute. But, because the State doesn’t require Personal Injury Protection or PIP for the motorcycle, people have gotten the impression that no insurance is required.

What happens is a motorcycle collides with an automobile. Since there is no PIP, and automobiles aren’t required to carry bodily injury, the injured motorcyclist may not have much coverage. We urge the motorcyclist to carry medical payments and uninsured motorist in case the at fault party doesn’t carry the coverages for injury to the not at fault party.

Teen Drivers

What’s a mother or father to do when their child becomes a teenager and wants to learn how to drive? Parents, be prepared, have them take driver’s education and hope that they can maintain an A or B average.  These for the two best ways to reduce overall sticker shock when you go to add your teenager. Rates will more than likely go up $150 – $200 / month.

Teenagers are the most likely to have auto accidents, they are inexperienced and many cities have complex driving patterns and with under developed reflexes and not too much knowledge of the road, accidents happen. Merging into traffic on a highway and making left-hand turns across oncoming traffic can be very complex maneuvers.  Not surprisingly, teenagers have the highest crash ratio of any group in the US.

Some factors that have been found to contribute to accidents are having multiple teenagers in the car, texting and talking on the phone, and driving late at night. Parents may want to set up a pack with their young driver so that they understand the fundamentals of safe driving and are encouraged to adhere to them. The National Safety Council has created a sample contract called the New Driver Deal, that parents and teenagers can sign to help reinforce safe habits.

Many parents have considered putting a teen on their own policy, but it will be more expensive since the teen is benefiting from the parent’s credit score and driving record. All in all, teen driving is expensive, but will reduce as the driver gets more time on the road.

Assignment of Benefits (AOB) Pitfalls and Perils

This action, AOB, occurs when vendors file claims with overstated costs and then threaten to sue, or put a lien on a homeowners home if the insurance company doesn’t pay them.

As a consumer, you must be very careful when vendors come to perform services and ask you to sign a form. It may give them rights over you and your policy. As agents, we see this with many companies who you may contact in an emergency situation to remediate, before you have had a chance to contact your own insurance company.

A service company may not even explain the documents that the unsuspecting homeowner may sign. This company will inflate the costs of the service as much as 4x due to third party fees. The insurer will attempt to negotiate, but the service company files suits or puts a lien on your property as the insurance company is withholding payment. The homeowner is caught in the middle.

In many situations, the claim is paid with inflated fees, but the homeowner still hasn’t had his concerns handled. The job can be incomplete, shoddy, and the policyholder has no recourse.

So, be prepared, and your best defense is to contact your agent or carrier to see if they have a preferred list of vendors who will handle the claim accordingly.

Do I need Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

As an insurance agent, I would respond and say, “Yes.” And, there are many reasons why I suggest you carry it. One in five Florida drivers are uninsured so this sets you up for an unhandled loss if you have an incident with one of the five drivers who are driving illegally or even, with the state mandated minimum coverages.

You may feel that you are adequately covered because we’re a no-fault state and you carry Personal Injury Protection or PIP that covers you and passengers in your car. This is your first line of defense and does cover a portion of your medical expenses, some lost wages, at home care and a small death benefit, but it caps out at $10,000.

What happens if you have an accident with someone who doesn’t carry any insurance and your injuries exceed the $10,000 afforded by PIP. This is when your own Uninsured Motorist coverage responds. It covers your medical expenses and lost wages not fully paid by your no fault or PIP coverage. It will also cover any ongoing medical expenses and future wage losses. You may need it to cover disability and pain and suffering, or even bon vivant. It even covers you if you aren’t in your own car.

This is an elective coverage that can be stacked or non-stacked. This means is you are carrying $100,000/300,000 bodily injury limits and you have two cars, you can elect stacked and your coverage limits double to $200,000/$600,000. Your uninsured motorist coverage can be as high as your bodily injury limits, so make sure you have maxed out this important coverage.

We hope that this non-mandatory coverage will be a permanent part of your personal protection program.

safety-harbor-350Safety Harbor is a city on the west shore of Tampa Bay in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. It was incorporated in 1917. The population was 16,884 at the 2010 census.

It is governed by an elected Mayor and City Commission. City governmental departments are administered by a City Manager, who is appointed by the City Commission. It features a lovely small town atmosphere, often compared to the fictional town of Mayberry. There are quaint restaurants, a marina, a pier, parks, arts and crafts stores and the famous Safety Harbor Spa.

The area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. In June 2008, a 6,000-year-old spearhead was found at Marshall Street Park. The inhabitants of the area at the time of Spanish exploration were the Tocobaga people, who lived in villages around Tampa Bay. The adaptation of this culture relied on wild resources. Safety Harbor sites have yielded pottery, and artifacts of copper, shell, and stone. The Tocobaga were known for constructing various ceremonial and communal mounds to bury the dead. Most of these mounds were destroyed in the early 1900s due to development. However, one of these ceremonial mounds is still visible in Safety Harbor’s Phillippe Park (see photo). Shells found in these mounds were used to pave city streets.

Safety Harbor is the home of the historic Espiritu Santo Springs, or “Springs of the Holy Spirit”, a natural mineral spring. Its waters were given this name in 1539 by the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, who was supposedly searching for the mythical “Fountain of Youth”. Prior to the Spanish exploration of Florida, the Tocobaga and Timuquan tribes are believed to have fished and bathed in the spring’s waters.
